X-ray vision - The ability to see through objects

by Jan Wesselmann

This series was planned and realized as one part of my final exams to become an Advertising Photographer. I created an idea of daily devices, shown in their typical surroundings.

Each device shows different transparencies and insights. Plain and stylistic elegance combined in a sophisticated realization. To reach this aim I disassembled the devices into their components and spray-painted them white. After that, I shot all parts from the tripod with a medium format camera.

This allowed me to shoot each piece individually and assemble the parts into the whole devices later on. With this digital technique and by using masks I was able to make the devices look transparent.

The series is supposed to visualize the technical and electric influence on our daily life by looking into the device. The interaction of the white-colored parts makes the motives seem realistic and also soulless in a way. It catches the viewer.

For the realization, I used a broncolor Unilite combined with a 90x120cm Softbox mounted on a gallows light stand hanging above the set. To get a further catchlight and more contrast I used a second broncolor Unilite. The hard light was shaped by a broncolor Standard P65 Reflector with a tight grid. This has the effect of a better division of the device and the ground on which it is standing on. The Unilite flashes were operated by a broncolor power pack. This gave me the ability to deal with a light intensity very flexibly. While shooting every single exposure, it was quite important to me to always get the best spectral composition and continuous color temperature. Also, the powerful modifying light was very useful for setting the right perspective and creating the compositions of the different stylistic surroundings.“
