The beginning of light

The photoshoot took place in an open outdoor area in Bogor, Indonesia, using large trees as a visual representation of the forest. Working in an open environment meant embracing natural unpredictability shifting daylight, humidity, and changing weather conditions – while still maintaining visual consistency throughout the shoot.

I recently had the chance to test the new Stelos monolight during a product shoot featuring a luxury watch, and I came away genuinely impressed. Stelos is lightweight yet incredibly reliable, fitting effortlessly into my studio setup. The batteries lasted the entire session, which gives me full confidence they’ll perform just as well on location with clients.

Overpowering the sun: Creating with dancers and light

For this shoot with professional dancers, we chose an unused industrial loading site. The raw concrete walls, empty loading bays, and wide open asphalt provided both a striking backdrop and the freedom to move dynamically with the performers. Shooting in this type of environment is always exciting, because it combines the unpredictability of an improvised performance with the challenge of shaping light in an unforgiving outdoor space.

A while ago, I was commissioned to shoot several campaign images showing the protagonists of the Gelders brand. The agency wanted a less polished and commercial look, so we ensured the lighting complemented this request. Harsh shadows and dramatic lighting made for a compelling visual.

Guernsey’s harbor, rugged coastline, and Karl Taylor’s studio became the testing grounds for the new broncolor Stelos. Karl explored how the 800 J monolight performed in very different scenarios, pushing it in both controlled and challenging environments.

Testing the new broncolor Stelos outdoors felt like opening a dialogue with light itself. I wanted to go beyond illumination and reach for something closer to painting - that soft, romantic atmosphere of the German late 18th and early 19th century, when nature was both subject and spirit.

Creating a conceptual dance image

When I was asked to create a preview image for Jasmine Ellis Projects' upcoming dance piece, Everything That Is Wrong With Me, we didn’t have much to work with—just one dancer, no choreography yet, and only a rough idea that parachutes would play a major role in the set and costumes. The challenge was to capture the essence of the piece before it even existed.
