How to Capture Fast Movements in Sports Photography

The theme of this tutorial was to capture fast movement on camera while working with our monolight Siros.

Using the Siros on location for an Ice Hockey action shoot worked amazing. Our Siros is a very fast, simple to handle and powerful monolight. I was able to freeze the motion without any problems.

For this photo shoot I used one Siros 400 S and two Siros 800 S. It was all about freezing the action. The Siros 400S was attached to our Para 88. The Para 88 is a strong light reflector and spread the light evenly on the players. Using that combination made it possible to work with lower light (level 7) and I still got a fast flash duration of around 1/7000s to freeze the motion. Para 88 rather focused is very efficient; I was able to work with less power, but at the same time with a faster flash duration.

Attached onto one of our Siros 800 S was a basic reflector L40 combined with a very narrow honeycomb grid. I used the honeycomb grid to get the light more focused, the light needed to be set precisely and be controlled.

Our 30x120 strip softbox attached onto an other Siros 800 S was used in this case to create a light for the black helmet.

Thanks to the combination of shooting with our Siros on Speed Mode and our different light shapers it was possible to freeze the action nicely.

This picture was shot with a focal length of 32mm. The exposure time was 1/250 s and the aperture f/5.6.
