Interactive Forensic Photography with the Scope D50

The Scope D50 supports the quick and detailed documentation of pieces of evidence when examining a crime scene. This innovative forensic photography method is based on Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI).

On the scene, the Scope D50 hardware is placed over the piece of evidence and the system takes automatically a sequence of 48 images, each illuminated differently. Afterward, a surface model is created from these images. Investigators can then virtually modify the light angle as desired, from the zenith to a skimming light – a valuable tool to analyse, interpret and share evidences found at the crime scene. Going beyond usual forensic photography, the Scope D50 makes physical evidence interactively visible!

Search for details that will make a difference in your investigation!

Use your mouse or finger to interact with the surface models below. Enter the full-screen mode using the square button, zoom and hold the mouse button to change the light angle on the surface model. These forensic photography examples include striations on pieces of evidence such as a sole of shoes, shoe prints, screwdriver indents on several materials, screwdriver microdetails, and tool silicon moulding. Applying Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) on crime scenes is a further useful instrument in forensic imaging.

A device for experts

  • Discover details invisible to the naked eye

Remove the colour and emphasize on the surface details that would not be visible to the human eye. The Surface Enhance option allows you to analyse the model without environmental distractions. Adjusting the light settings for individual details enhances the chance of finding the deciding feature. Furthermore, pictures taken with defined and calibrated light settings help to prove the integrity of a piece of evidence.

  • Capture in-situe, modify lighting conditions in lab

Thanks to the transport case and the optional battery kit, the system can be used in the lab or on the field. Fingerprints, footwear impressions, or any other pieces of evidence left at a crime scene can be captured within minutes. The battery lasts for an entire day of capturing with the Scope D50.

  • Multispectral analyses

The Scope D50 UV/IR can capture images directly with ultraviolet (UV) , infrared (IR) , and visible light with the same setup. Multispectral analyses offer many possibilities when working with material or chemical compounds reactive with UV/IR wavelengths.

  • Rapid capture process

The automated capturing process allows efficient evidence collection. After placing the Scope D50 over a piece of evidence, it only takes about 1 minute to capture the required 48 images. The system can even be operated by a semi-skilled person.

  • Easy image export for documentation

Change the lighting settings in the software, highlight some information, and document easily pieces of evidence thanks to the export images function. An infinite number of light sources can be virtually added. Four different light types can be used: Directional, Point, Spot, and Ambient. Thanks to the reduced file size, the data can comfortably be shared for peer-review.
