Cheers to Lighting

by Cesar Oliveira

A high impact photo doesn’t always imply a complex light setup. I want to share with you an image that I created with only one lamp. Here, the concept was to draw as much attention as possible to the bottles. So, we thought of making a hard shadow, to create depth and highlight the product.

I chose to use on the left side a Pulso G 3200 J lamp with the Fresnel spot attachment, approximately at 3 meters, connected to the Grafit A4 power pack, with a window shaped mask, to create the shadow. The mask was placed only 1 meter away from the product, so the shadow would be harder. The greatest advantage of the Fresnel is that it emits hard light, but the shadow is not as crisp as of a bare bulb light.

For this image, we used the same concept, playing with shadows to create depth. I used the same Pulso G 3200 J lamp with the Fresnel spot attachment, but on the opposite side of the camera. The lamp was placed at 3 to 4 meters away, to create a very hard and contrasted light between the shadows and highlights. In this case, since the key light was behind the product, I needed to use a fill light. I chose to use two Picolite with the Fresnel spot attachments to illuminate the label and the neck of the bottle. With the Fresnel spot attachment I can create a spot light with soft gradation. You may notice, that I have two diffuser rolls on both sides of the product, but with no light towards them. The only effect I got from them, was to create a very soft fill light, so the glasses wouldn’t get any unwanted reflections.

For this last image, we went for a different mood with a more complex light set. I needed to create a gradient of light in the background, but I didn’t want it to interfere with the light of the product itself. The choice was to use the Fresnel spot attachment again, completely focused on spot light, to create a very even and smooth gradient. On the right side of the camera, I used a Pulso G 3200 J lamp with a Softbox, to illuminate the product with soft light. On top, I used a Beauty Dish with grid to light the set and give an extra punch to the liquid inside the glass. On the left side, I chose to use the diffusion roll with the Pulso G 3200 J lamp along with a P65 reflector with a narrow grid, to get a gradient in the middle of the diffuser. This light is just to create a little fill light and some highlights in the neck of the bottle and the glass.

In cases like these, we can´t forget to use a black card near the left corner of the background, to block the light from it, otherwise we will kill the gradient.

I use broncolor lighting in all my creations, because it makes me feel confident to overcome any challenge. I know that the power and the colour temperature are precise, shot after shot. For me, broncolor is a work tool that not only provides the best results, but helps save a lot of time when I’m creating an image, and as we all know, for a professional photographer, time is money!

I hope you enjoy it, and if you are interested in seeing more of my work you can check my website at www.cesaroliveirafotografia.com or follow me on Instagram @cesaroliveiraphotography.
