How to Shoot Portraits with the Octabox

The aim of this recent photo shoot was to capture a moody and expressive portraiture.

I used two broncolor Siros 800S attached to broncolors strip softboxes, a broncolor Octabox 75 attached to our Pulso G lamp head and a broncolor Boxlight also used with a Pulso G lamp head.

The one strip softbox I placed left behind the model to create a rim light which will affect her left shoulder and arm. The second strip softbox was placed above the models hair for the hair light. The third light, the octabox 75, was positioned at an angle on the right side of the model.

Quiet from the side. You get a moody set up, because one side of the models face is almost completely dark and the other nicely lit and high contrast. The problem was that her left eye didn’t get any reflections from the octabox and kind of looked dead/boring. So I needed to come up with a solution, the solution was a fourth light.

The fourth light should create a reflection in the models left eye, but should not affect the rest of the light set up. A boxlite was used with very low power only 0.1. I placed it on the floor in front of the model.

The final image has got mood, an expressive expression, nice reflections in both eyes and is high in contrast which makes this portrait exciting.
