How to Shoot Portraits with a Beauty Dish and Octabox

The main light in this shot was a relatively small Softbox: A Octabox with a diameter of 75cm. It came from the right and was positioned about 1 meter above and 2 meters away from the model. It was not directed to the models face but rather to her feet. Like this, a mostly even illumination from head to feet was achieved. Due to the small size of the light source a clearly defined shadow appeared in the full body shots. (Not visible here.)

The fill-in light was a beauty dish. This light was not placed in a "standard" position but on a very low floor stand. (You can clearly see these low reflections in her eyes). Like this I got a more dramatic look and deeper shadows in the portrait.

Honey comb grids were essential on the fill-in light. Otherwise the light would have illuminated the floor in an unpleasant way. The grids gave me more control to direct the light where I actually needed it - and only there!

Finally the main light was powerful enough (and the background close enough) that I did not need any additional lights to illuminate the grey background paper.
