How to Shoot Portraits Using Gels and Filters

The set up for this shot is quite simple - the different posings of the model change the light much more and quicker than replacing the lights all the time.

I simply started with an Octabox 75 from the top left - as seen from the camera. The light shaper has to be positioned high enough to receive deep shadows. On the other hand, this light had to be low enough because I still wanted to see the reflection in the eyes to avoid, that they look dull due to missing high lights.

Second, from the right of the camera and below the models face, I set up a Beauty dish. I placed it in a way that its light does not reach the areas of the face lit by the first light - otherwise we would "mix" the lights and the colours in these areas.

Finally blue gel filters were placed on the Octabox 75 while the Beauty dish was filtered dark orange.

I was using a digital medium format camera with a focal length of 120mm. The camera settings were f11 and the shutter speed 1/125s at ISO 100.
