How to Shoot Food Photography: Cheese

The idea behind this image is to create a very clean, almost surreal picture.

Very hard light emphasises the edge of the wooden board, and the cheese itself, which is almost shining. For this purpose two projection spots are used. The main light is created with with a Pulso-spot 4 and a 150mm Projection spot. This light is covering almost the entire edge of the wooden board, the wooden edge of the knife and of course the cheese.

The second Projection Spot, is the projection attachment of the Picolite, which is coming from the opposite side. To avoid double shadows, the level must be very low.

To achieve nice results with such a hard and light, it is better to have some structured cheese like Parmigiano or Sbrinz, as non-structures ones might look like shiny plastic.

Two honeycomb grids are hitting the wooden board, while a Softbox from backlight is reflecting in the blade of the knife. To make some fill-in a white board is placed at the front.

This picture is shot with a medium format camera and a focal length of 120 mm. The exposure time was 1/125 s and the aperture f/ 22.
