How to Photoshoot a Dog

Capturing a dog on camera requires patience, you need to work fast, observe the dog and give yourself time to get to know the dog. The flash recycling time is an important number for any photographer. Especially when working with animals you need to rely on fast recycling time, so you are able to frame the right and precise moment. You don’t have the time to recompose, make changes, wait for the right expression and you can’t allow yourself to capture some black frames in between.

For this shoot I needed a product with a fast recycling time and my choice was simply a Scoro 3200 S in combination with the 120 x 180 softbox. The Scoro 3200 S has got a recharging time between 0.02 – 0.8 seconds depending on what energy level you are working on.

The softbox was placed almost next to the dog to reduce power and gain a fast recycling time and flash duration to freeze action. The 120 x 180 softbox gave a nice illumination on the dog.

It was a great pleasure working with Lenny in the studio.

This image was shot with a focal length of 75mm and a f-stop of 16.
