How to Keep an Open Aperture when Using Flash

The shooting took place in a historical location in Taipei with temples and old buildings. The model wore a very traditional dress intended to fit this special location.

I chose an entrance of a temple as a background as its decoration had a similar red colour as the model’s dress. The viewers’ attention should be on the model and not on the background, and I therefore photographed her with an open aperture of 2.8.

In order not to have too much light, I had to compensate with the shutter speed, which was set to 1/400 s. The HS mode of the Siros L allowed me not to have any troubles with the synchronisation time of the flash.

The model was standing in the shadow, therefore I used a Softbox 60x100 from the top left in a horizontal position for a smooth light. The soft rim light on her arm and hair on the right side is the ambient light.
