Satos receives the prestigious Red Dot Award 2024 for User Interface Design

We are thrilled to announce that the user interface of our latest system, Satos and Pulso L, has won the prestigious Red Dot Award 2024. This award is one of the largest and most respected design competitions in the world, celebrating excellence in international product design, communication design, and design concepts. This prestigious award confirms broncolor's leading position in user-friendliness and our commitment to outstanding design quality.

A winning collaboration

The success of the Satos and Pulso L user interface is the result of a close partnership between broncolor and HMI Project GmbH. HMI Project, a multi-award-winning studio for user interface design, specializes in creating ergonomic software interfaces for industrial applications. Their expertise in developing touch-optimized usability solutions was crucial in achieving extraordinary results.

The objective of our collaboration was clear from the beginning: to create a winning user interface for the most sophisticated flash/continuous light system, reflecting the values of the broncolor brand and meeting the needs of the world's best photographers.

"I'm beyond proud that Satos and Pulso L have received the prestigious Red Dot Award. It proves that our internal and external design teams are among the best in the industry and capable of developing tools for the most demanding customers in the imaging industry.", says Boris A. Horn, CEO of Bron Elektronik AG.

The design journey

Our goal was to create an intuitive, clean, and consistent user interface for both the power pack and the lamp. We ensured that all functions could be adjusted via a multitouch display, physical buttons, or through an app/API interface. A major challenge was to seamlessly integrate hard key operation with touch operation, making it feel completely natural. User surveys and subsequent usability tests revealed that while touch operation was well-accepted, the haptic rotary wheel was preferred for fine adjustments of light intensity.

The design process followed a classic approach, from initial sketches and scribbles to wireframing with various clickable prototypes, leading to the final design for the Satos Power Pack and the Pulso L lamp, which features a smaller display without touch functionality.

“We are proud to have contributed to the success of the Satos project. There were some challenges, such as integrating a touch screen with real buttons, but our good cooperation with the team from broncolor has demonstrated that we are a reliable and competent partner. We look forward to new joint tasks in the future.”, remarked Markus Buberl, CEO of HMI Project GmbH.

Future Outlook

Both broncolor and HMI Project see this award as motivation to continue developing top-quality user interfaces for future products and to carry on the proven collaborative process.
