How to Use a Strip Mask for Portrait Photography

One of the most important factors in portrait photography is to capture the expression and set the light that it enhances the mood of the image. That was exactly what I was trying to achieve. Creating a simple, but yet expressive portraiture.

My main light was a Siros 800 S attached to the Strip softbox 30x120. The strip softbox 30x120 was placed in front of the model, very close, so I was able to work with less flash power and made sure it didn’t destroy the mood. It was important to get the right light fall off and the right reflections in the eyes.

Achieving the thin reflection in the eyes was done with the accessories strip mask. The strip mask made it possible to get more control over my light and to flag the light off which left the far right side of the models face in the dark.

Looking at the picture I realized that it would be nice to set a rim light on the left side of the model. This rim light was achieved with a Siros 800 S in combination with a strip softbox. The strip softbox was placed behind and next to the model. Here I had to pay attention to not create lens flare.

How about highlighting the models dark hair. Of course the light had to be set precisely otherwise it would of destroyed the atmosphere. My choice was a Siros 400 S in combination with a P70 reflector and the narrowest honeycomb grid. I just illuminated the background a tiny little bit.

The last task was to get the right expression from the model. In my opinion the expression and the light make the images.
