How to Shoot a Natural Looking Portrait

The goal was to capture a natural, very simple portraiture and achieve a clean and nice black and white look.

First of all my focus was on setting a light on the background. This background light was created by a Siros 800S in combination with our P70 reflector and the strip grid. The strip grid has an innovative grid geometry. The grid cells are not round but have an elongated rectangular shape in proportion of 5:1.

I positioned the Siros 800 S so that it illuminated one side of the background more than the other side.

The second light was a Siros 400 S attached to the Octabox 75. The Octabox 75 was placed on the right side of the model, very close, so I was able to work with less flash power, get a nice soft reflection in her eyes and made sure it didn’t destroy the mood. It was important to get the right light fall off.

Looking at the picture I realized that the models left side was far too dark. My solution was to use a white reflector and placing it on the other side of the models face to fill inn the shadows, but still keep contrast and mood.

Seeing the result I’m happy with the outcome of this shoot. You can feel the game between shadow and light. I captured a clean black and white portrait where mood is not missing.
