How to Photograph a Dancers Duo

After the photoshoot with Diego, Tana (also a dancer from the Basel Ballet Team) joined us in the studio.

I wanted to maintain the same look, but the very hard light that I used when we shot the solo of Diego (a single P70 standard reflector with grids), did not really work anymore. Too many shadows appeared - especially when the two dancers posed close to each other. Therefore, I replaced the standard reflector with a large Softbox 120 x 180 cm, about 2,5 meters above the models.

Even as the main light was much softer now, I still needed fill-in lights for the dark shadows. Here, I could use the same lights (two soft boxes 90 x 120 cm) as during the shooting with the solo dancer: I simply pulled them a little closer to the camera, so these boxed actually filled in the deep shadows better and reduced the contrast more effectively.

This light set up with three big soft boxes illuminated a large area in the studio quite evenly. The dancers could move freely and I almost never had to restrict their "flow".

The picture is shot with a digital medium format camera at ISO 100 and a focal length of 90 mm. The shutter time was 1/90 s (while the flash duration was much shorter at around 1/3000 s) and the aperture f/16.
