How to Create Rim Lighting with Softboxes

In this image the model wears a “turban-bath towel” on her head and there are some small water drops on her skin, as if she just came out of a shower.

The image is done with two narrow Softboxes used as a backlight (a 30x120 on the right side and a 35x60 on the left side). They were used on purpose without any flag against flair and they shine into the lens. In front of the lens there is a transparent plastic bag with a hole; the white glow on both side of the image comes from there. On the model the two Softboxes nicely shape her contours, make a nice rim light and make the water drops shine.

From the front a Picolite with a Fresnel spot attachment is used and makes a small highlight in her eyes. The light of the Fresnel spot is focused on her face not reaching her hairs and shoulders. It is coming from above, and there is a dark and sharp shadow under her lips and nose. The hardness of this light is a good contrast to the softness of the white glow and works nicely on her young face.

The image has been taken with a medium format camera and a focal length of 120mm. The exposure time was 1/125s and the aperture f/11, with ISO 100.
