How to Shoot a Black and White Portrait

In this image I used a Pulso-spot 4 with a projection spot and Gobos for the background. I defocused the projection spot and illuminated an area of aprox. 2m x 1.5m

For the very “active” and distinct background I needed a hard light on the model’s face, with dark shadows matching this “strong” background. The main attention should still be on her and not on the background.

The Picolite therefore has been used with a Fresnel attachment in a focused position illuminating basically only her face and creating very hard shadows and small and bright reflections in her eyes. With such an illumination the bright eyes of the model get very shiny.

There is no fill-in light and there are areas with no detail at all. This is of course a matter of taste and does not disturb me at all in this kind of image.
